Lace Works!
June 8, 2009
Artist: Alwynne Crowsen
Title: Lace life of Alwynne Crowsen
Date: 2007 Exhibition at Object Space, Ponsonby Road
Media: Needle & Thread
I went to see Alwynnes lace works at Object space many years ago. She is in her late eighties & has been working her needle in the most beautiful delicate way. This is a dying craft sadly enough, Alwynne runs workshops in the evening, a community style class, this is decades and decades of craft work, she had created over 500 pieces in her lifetime up to the exhibition in lace, this poster hangs in my room, curated by Anna Wallace.
Chains
June 7, 2009

Artist: Unknown
Title: Untitled
Media: Polystyrene
Size: Floor to Ceiling of a small room.
Date: 2008/2009
This is an installation exhibited on New North Road, just off the main road in a room with a concrete slab & a glass window front from floor to ceiling to allow us to view the piece. There is no text with this piece. I take notice of this because it is construction, connection, intertwined. It is polystyrene giant sized links of a chain been wrappped up by smaller chains.

Artist: Dan from Sacred Tattoo Parlour

My sisters first tattoo of the Virgin Mary. Referenced from an old picture given from her mother, Dan the tattoo artist incorporated his own strokes with the picture to paint Our Lady. The art of tattoo with needle & ink allows us to be a canvas, adorned with art that we give blood for.

Media: Photograph 20 x 37cm
Date: May 2009

I love the angle this shot is taken at, i love that it is as the title reads “pins in needles”. I like the cross symbol created and it also represents cross stitch in which these tools create.

A ROOMFULL OF TREASURES!
NAME: Wunderkamer Store
LOCATION : Ponsonby Road, Auckland Central
MEDIA: Exclusive Eastern European clothing for men and women. Jewellery importerd and locally made. Scents for all. Shoes to die for, or kill for!
This is my favourite store in Auckland. I love the beautiful tailored threads that hang from their hooks, the scents are good enough to eat and the jewellery is chunk, antique, rustic, original and quite reasonable in price. I mainly love the Interior of the store, the ripped and stripped walls, the taxidermi that are nailed in or placed in beautiful wooden cabinets in the back or at the front window that is like no other window dress around. The text used for sale banners are fit for a poster on the wall. The room is a conscious space, every object has been placed consciously so it becomes a living room! I loooove this joint!

Artist: Jennis Alegra Hayes

Media: Felt & threads on a loom
Size: 11″ Round
Date: 2009
Jennis exhibits 4 pieces in a silent auction of third year visual art students at Unitec ,Mt Albert campus. Her other three pieces are felt & thread on canvas. I love that stitch work as an art is sought after as a means of expression with the young generation. It is a root of tradition thats blood will always flow as long as we are here.

WTH A BLANKET & STITCH
Artist: Sue Garlick.
Date: 2008-2009
Media: Woollen blankets & thread.
Size: Blanket to hand comb size pieces.
Sue works her pins and needles into these blankets with so much attention to detail. Every seam & stitch is by hand, using blankets she has picked up along the way of op shops. Time is a big part of this skill, blankets are collected from the past, the older the more unique and grey army blankets from the old school sick bay. Handsewing is an art form leading back to our ancestors, and each piece demands alot of time. They are time pieces.
